How Do I Create A Brand on Social Media?

So many of us struggle to know how to create and share our content on social media.  We often feel like there is a constant tornado of news, pictures, and video clips flying at us from all directions.  However, we all still have the same fundamental questions: How do I come up with great new creative ideas for content? How do I get noticed and go viral?  Which platform(s) should I use for my brand?

I can tell you right now, the answer is both simpler and more overwhelming than you may think.

Brainstorming content:

“Where to begin…” Well, we’ve all been there right?  When the well runs dry there is always one tried and true method to fill it up again: the role model method.  When you don’t have any ideas, the best way to get going again is to think to yourself, “What do we want this brand to be?  Where do we want this to go?” Once you have that information all you have to do is research who else is trying to do that and what have they done.  What are the major players talking about and what is your take on that subject?

Becoming the Eye of the Storm:

Once you have taken the time to explore the conversational landscape of your industry, you will be able to figure out what related ideas you can think of that haven’t been talked about yet. THOSE ideas are your value proposition.  THOSE ideas are what you should discuss.  Your knowledge and your opinions as an expert in the field are why people are connecting with your media.  Just remember, timing is just as important as a great idea so do not fall into the trap of waiting too long searching for the perfect thing to say.  If you have anything at all to say, say it in the moment to keep yourself engaged and to keep the conversation moving.  Once this habit is developed, you will have no trouble generating endless related content for your audience.

AND Remember: If you are ever caught deciding between two good options, the answer may not suprise you. It's both.

Making it rain:

As we know, storms are needed most in areas where the landscape is dry and arid and not needed at all in areas where it is constantly raining.  However, neither of these is the best place for a storm because both are prone to flooding.  The dry arid areas make it hard for rain to penetrate the hard dry soil and the storm prone areas already have so much rain that it can’t be absorbed back into the earth fast enough.  What does this mean for you?  You do not want to begin posting content on social media that is already used to brand materials like yours and you do not want to be the only one posting materials like yours either.  The key is to find a balance.  As we mentioned before, find a topic that is already being discussed and find a new angle.  Finding a platform for your brand is much the same.  Find out where the brands like yours are focusing their efforts.  Then find out what areas where they are absent.  Once you have done this, you can begin to figure out where the various platforms fall between these two endpoints.  This will help you to figure out where there are eyes and ears that are receptive to your brand and message that are not getting the content that they need.

In Summary:

Always seek the balance between being relatable and providing your audience with new ideas.  Remember, when in doubt, you can always take the audience’s perspective.
